Politician, General Secretary of Communist Party

Marco Rizzo is 61 and the secretary general of the Italian Communist Party. Holding a degree in political science, he is a journalist and author of various books and publications.

The son of a worker at the Fiat Mirafiori plant, he grew up in a working-class district of Turin. A member of the Italian Communist Party since 1981, he was elected as a provincial councillor in Turin five times, a member of the Chamber of Deputies in Rome three times, and a Member of European Parliament once.

He was one of the founders of the Communist Refoundation and the Party of Italian Communists (PDCi), for which he was the coordinator of the national secretaries and the party leader in the Chamber of Deputies and the European Parliament. He has always stood out in Italian politics for the unusual consistency of his ideas, and in 2009 he founded and ran what would become the new Italian Communist Party.
